Letter Recognition Worksheets (A-Z FREE!)

Are you doing preschool from home? Or just giving your little one a head start on learning? These letter recognition worksheets are perfect for moms to use with their littles at home.

Kids LOVE to learn! 10 minutes here and there of purposeful learning adds up fast! I’m working on letter recognition with my 2-year-old, and she loves to search out specific letters in books and anything else with words on it, so I designed these Letter Recognition Worksheets specifically for her.

(Actually, my daughter drew all the images used in these worksheets, so it was a team effort!)

This set of letter recognition worksheets uses all uppercase letters.

The directions for these pages are simple – “Look for the and circle all of them that you can find!” My daughter wasn’t happy with her circles, so she said she wanted to “color” the letters instead. Totally fine – she’s still identifying the letters. 😉

How do you teach letter recognition?

• Start with one letter at a time – I focus on just one letter per week. Just don’t rush it!
• Show your child a big picture of the letter, and trace it with your finger, describing it as “down, down, over” etc….whichever directions you’d use to trace it, so the shape will be in their mind.
• Look at the Letter Recognition paper for the letter you’re working on, and try to find the letters with them and point them out, reminding them of the shape of the letter (“T goes dowwnn…with a hat!”).
• Get alphabet fridge magnets and have them find the letter you’re working on.
• Get out a couple of books that have your letter in the title (we just look at the front cover) – then ask your child if they see that letter.
• PRAISE your child when they recognize/find the letter you’re learning! It might seem so easy to you, but it’s huge to them when they recognize it! So treat it as a big deal and be so proud of them!

We’d love to speed up the process, wouldn’t we? There’s no telling how long it will take your child to identify letters, but they key is be consistent with pointing out letters to them. Before you know it, they’ll be telling YOU that they see certain letters!

It’s really no different than teaching it to “non-struggling students,” except that you’ll need more patience! Just be consistent with showing them letters and telling them which one it is. Eventually, they’ll remember! It just may take longer, and that’s fine.
If you need to simplify things so that they can get answer correctly and gain some self-confidence, write your “letter of the week” on a markerboard along with another letter. Ask them which of the two letters (say our letter is “T”) is T. Then pair T with another letter option, and again ask them which one is T. Keep rotating out the “wrong” letter so they get more chances at correctly identifying. This method helps a lot in the beginning!

Follow the same steps as listed above in “How do you teach letter recognition?”
Make sure you make it *really fun*. Games and crafts encourage letter awareness, and preschoolers LOVE silly games and fun crafts!
Paint your letter, put coins in the shape of your letter…anything to just look at that letter and remind them which one it is.
Teaching letters doesn’t have to be all worksheets, but these letter recognition worksheets are definitely great for adding into a routine full of games and crafts. 👍🏼 Plus they get some practice with coordination as they put a circle around the letters they find!
